Solar Hot Water Government Rebates
The amount you can claim depends on what type of water heater you are switching from, what type of environmentally friendly solar hot water or Heat Pump product you are converting to, as well as the current REC value.
Federal Government Solar Hot Water Programme
On 19 February 2010 the Federal Government announced that a new household Renewable Energy Bonus Scheme will assist
households to save money on power bills and reduce their carbon emissions. This new Scheme replaces the
Home Insulation Program and the Solar Hot Water Rebate Program both of which were discontinued as of close of
business 19 February 2010. Eligible households can claim a rebate of $1,000 for a solar hot water system or
$600 for a heat pump hot water system through the solar hot water rebate component of the Renewable Energy Bonus Scheme.
This rebate applies for systems ordered and purchased from 20 February 2010.

Latest news: The Queensland Government Solar Hot Water Rebate
The Queensland Government has announced a new rebate for eligible householders who replace an electric hot water system
with a solar hot water system or heat pump. The rebate is for systems purchased on or after 13 April 2010.
Eligible householders will be able to apply for:
- $1000 for the installation of a solar hot water system or heat pump (for pensioners and low-income earners)
- $600 for the installation of a solar hot water system or heat pump

Transitional arrangements for the Federal Government's rebate has been extended
The Federal Government has extended their deadline for receiving solar hot water rebate applications to 14 May 2010.
Applications received on or before this date will be assessed for the $1600 ($1000 for heat pumps) rebate amount.
If you have purchased or ordered a solar hot water heater under the Queensland Solar Hot Water Program on or
before 19 February 2010, please ensure you lodge your Federal rebate application as soon as possible as it must be
received in Canberra on or before 14 May 2010.
Applications received from 15 May 2010 (regardless of the purchase and installation date) will be assessed by the
Federal Government for a $1000 rebate for solar hot water systems and a $600 rebate for heat pumps.

Closure of the Queensland Solar Hot Water Program
The Queensland Solar Hot Water Program is integrally linked to the Federal Government's Solar Hot Water Rebate.
Regrettably, due to the Federal Government's decision to end its program on 19 February 2010, the Queensland Solar
hot Water Program can no longer operate. As a result, the Queensland Solar Hot Water Program was suspended for review
on 20 February 2010. A decision was made on 9 March 2010 that the suspension would not be lifted and the Queensland
Solar Hot Water Program would be closed.
The decision by the Federal Government to end its program and introduce a new scheme means that the former Federal solar
hot water rebate of $1600 will reduce to $1000 under a new Federal Renewable Energy Bonus Scheme. Likewise, the former
Federal heat pump rebate of $1000 will reduce to $600 under the new Federal scheme. This leaves a large funding gap.
This reduction would have meant that the Queensland Government would have to find over $100 million to meet the original
Queensland Solar Hot Water Program target.

Eligibility Criteria
To apply for either $600 or $1000 under the Queensland Government Solar Hot Water Rebate, applicants must meet a number
of eligibility criteria.
Applicants should read the Guideline and application form containing full eligibility criteria, terms and conditions and
other important information, as part of any decision to purchase a solar water heater.
Some of the key eligibility criteria are provided below.
To be eligible for the Queensland Government Solar Hot Water Rebate applicants must:
- have replaced an existing electric storage hot water system installed at a principal place of residence in Queensland
- have installed a solar hot water system or heat pump that is eligible for at least 20 Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs)
- have had their solar water heater installed by suitably licensed parties (current BSA and occupational licences)
- have purchased their solar water heater on or after 13 April 2010
- be the owner or tenant where the system was installed, at the time the system was installed
- have installed a system that meets the minimum warranty periods
- lodge their rebate applications within 6 months of installation
If applying for the $1000 pensioner or low-income earner rebate, applicants must meet the general criteria above, and also
hold a current and valid:
- Centrelink Pension Concession card
- Centrelink Low-Income Health Care card
- Commonwealth Seniors Health card, or
- Department of Veterans' Affairs Pension Concession card (Blue only. Orange, white and gold cardholders are not eligible).
Please note, you can only apply for the low-income earner/pensioner rebate amount once.

Submitting an application for the Queensland Government Solar Hot Water Rebate does not guarantee eligibility.
Your application will be assessed by the Queensland Government and your eligibility determined before any rebate payment.
You may be asked to provide supporting evidence to confirm your eligibility before the rebate is paid.

What are RECs (Renewable Energy Certificates)?
RECs are certificates that are awarded with qualifying solar hot water systems. These are a federal government initiative designed to encourage the uptake of products that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Renewable energy certificates are traded on the market by energy companies who buy them from renewable energy producers (ie. households and companies who own the systems). As part of the process, customers who purchase solar hot water systems can
sell their RECs to their supplier/installer, or sell them independently to a buyer of their choice.
